Become as a little child
In my primary class this year, like everyone else, we are studying the New Testament. i teach the nine year old kids, in case you didn't know. well, we have these two kids that live down the street from us. "K" is 9, a girl, and "C" is 7, a boy. it is rather obvious that they don't get a whole lot of attention at home. they are constantly outside, wanting to play with either my son, 15 months, the boy next door, 25 months, or his cousins, all under the age of 5. they just come and spend hours down this way (they live about 4 houses up from us). needless to say, they are sooooo annoying sometimes. "K" isn't so bad. she can be fun, but "C" just doesn't stop talking. anyway, we've invited "K" to activity days quite a few times, and she has now become a regular. this is great. she gets along really well with the other girls. their parents are nice, i could describe them using one word, but it sounds mean, and i don't want it to. i really don't know them very well. i've never talked to the mom, but have talked to the dad a few times. ok, just think stereotypical whitetr*sh. the tattoos, the "gollum" labeled truck, the whole nine yards. but again, i don't mean that in a rude way, that is just the appearance they give off. anyway, we've talked to the kids a few times about coming to church, but never really pushed the idea. well, there was a lady just baptized in our ward, who i haven't gotten to know yet, but she shows up at church on sunday bringing "k" and "c". i had no idea they new each other. i think the mom was there too, but i'm not sure. so, "K" is in my class. like i said we've been studying the New Testament. Sunday was our last lesson on Jesus' mortal life. we were to talk about his resurrection. well, i decided to show my class "Finding Faith in Christ" (or you can get it here) to just give them a break from listening to me and to review some of the lessons that we had. "K" didn't even know who Jesus is. I was shocked. at activity days she has volunteered to say the prayers, with a little help of course. but i had no idea. she was soaking up the information like i had never seen before. and i served a mission. i've taught the gospel to people who didn't know of a "God" or "Jesus" but this was different. at the end of class, there is a lady who comes by and checks each classroom to make sure all of the windows are closed. when she came into our classroom, "k" looks at me and asks "Can I tell her?" i didn't know exactly what she meant, but said "sure." she tells the lady, "Did you know that Jesus died and was resurrected? and One day we will all be resurrected?" she was sooooo excited. i had explained what that meant during the movie and she had asked "what about my grandpa? I've never met my grandpa before, will I see him again?" It was the most comforting feeling to look at this nine year old girl and tell her "yes, i know that you will see your grandpa one day." it was just a great reminder of the innocence of little children- especially those that have never been taught anything religious. i don't know what will come of "K" and "C". i see them pretty often, and hopefully my tolerance for annoying children can become better. not just because they want to learn about church, but because i was reminded that they too are children of God, even if they won't stop talking.
